Eighty-five percent of companies are already using open-source software, with most of the remaining 15 percent expecting to do so within the next year, according to analysts at Gartner.

Gartner conducted its survey of 274 end-user organizations across the Asia/Pacific, Europe and North American markets in May and June, and announced the results .

Reason for using OSS(Open Source Software )by compnies  are

1. Lower Cost of OSS

2. OSS provides some protection against single-vendor lock-in

3. Fast time to market

4.Avoidance of complex procurement rules and procedures,

Gartner also raised concern over lack of formal policies . According to “a lack of formal policies could open companies up to intellectual-property violations.”

In terms of the business processes for which open-source software is being used, customer service headed Gartner’s list, although enterprise integration, finance and administration and business analytics also showed strongly.

MIT Mobile web development code is now open source

Massachusetts Institute of Technology is going to open source its Mobile Web Project early next year. Mobile Web Project is a project which provides up-to-date university information for its faculty, students and visitors over mobile devices.

The MIT mobile site offers a staff and student directory, a campus map, the shuttle schedule, an event calendar, class announcements for students, emergency information, and status updates for many of MIT’s tech services.

Obviously this is a good news for open source community . It is like a shot in the arm.

According to Andrew Yu (Mobile Devices Platform Project Manager) at MIT IS&T, the technology behind the project includes WURFL and Python, XHTML and CSS, PHP, MySQL, SOAP and RSS.
